Here are ten tips for training your puppy, to help make it successful:

  1. Read up on how to go about teaching the command or watch online videos. That way you will have a clear technique in mind and can avoid confusing the puppy.

  2. Ensure that the training takes place in a low distraction environment.

  3. Only use positive reinforcement; use a marker word such as ‘good’ to identify when the puppy has done the correct action, followed immediately with a small treat.

  4. Don’t get rid of the lure too early. Repeat the actions plenty of times to make sure the puppy knows exactly what the word means.

  5. Don't physically force your dog to do what you want, but show them. For example, you can teach a puppy sit by luring with a treat on its nose and lifting the treat up a little to encourage them to sit.

  6. Be steady and calm.

  7. Keep training sessions brief (five to ten minutes at a time) and concentrate on teaching a single behaviour. End with some play or fuss

  8. Keep track of your progress. Maybe video you’re training with your smart phone.

  9. Give the puppy time to figure out what you want. Instead of repeating the command over and over, say it a single time and let the dog figure it out with the help of luring. If the puppy is having trouble, stop, step back a step, and try again.

  10. If neither of you are having any fun, don’t push it and just try again later.
